A Steering Committee for the implementation of the National Broadband Plan (2020-2025), recently launched by President Muhammadu Buhari, has been inaugurated on Thursday by the Federal Government.
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantimi, who inaugurated the Steering Committee in Abuja, charged them to work assiduously and closely monitor the implementation of the Broadband Plan across the country.
Pantami, who emphasised the importance of broadband penetration, said the focus of the world is on the digital economy.
He added that the digital economy would create millions of jobs, alleviate poverty and contribute significantly to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He further disclosed that the implementation of the National Broadband Plan had begun already, adding that following his intervention, some states such as Ekiti, Plateau, Imo, Kwara, Gombe, Rivers, have reduced telecoms Right of Way charges to N145 per linear metre of fibre.
The minister further revealed that President Buhari had directed security agencies to protect telecoms infrastructure across the country against vandalism.
National Security Adviser to the President has been saddled with the responsibility of coordinating the security agencies to ensure adequate protection of telecoms infrastructure, Pantami said.
