Anti-racism Protests: Mob Pulls Down Christopher Columbus’ Statue

Police in Boston, United States of America, have reported the demolition of the statue of Christopher Columbus in the city, in line with calls to remove sculptures commemorating colonizers and slavers sweeping across  America on the back of anti-racism protests.

A Columbus statue was also vandalized in downtown Miami, and another was dragged into a lake earlier in the week in Richmond, Virginia, according to local reports.

The incidents come as pressure builds in the United States to rid the country of monuments associated with racism following massive demonstrations over the killing of George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis last month

Columbus, credited with the discovery of the region now known as the United States of America, was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa, part of what is now Italy. In his 20s he moved to Lisbon, Portugal, and later resettled in Spain, which remained his home base for the duration of his life.

He was renowned for participating in several trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. One such voyage, to the island of Khios, in modern-day Greece, brought him the closest he would ever come to Asia.
