Arsene Wenger Linked With Return To Management 3 Years After Leaving Arsenal

Arsene Wenger could be set for a sensational return to management, three years after leaving Arsenal.

Wenger has been keeping himself busy as FIFA’s chief of global football development in recent years.

The 71-year-old has made headlines recently by suggesting radical changes to football including kick-ins instead of throw-ins and altering the offside rule.

Although his 22-year stint as Arsenal manager came to an end in 2018, Wenger still remains inextricably linked to his former club.

Wenger has never officially announced his retirement from management, but it is nonetheless surprising to see the Frenchman linked with a new job.

Yet, according to Swiss newspaper Blick, Wenger is one of the people being considered as a replacement for Vladimir Petkovic with the Switzerland national team.

Petkovic has been in charge of Switzerland since 2014 but is set to move on following Euro 2020 to join Bordeaux as Jean-Louis Gasset’s successor.

He had another year left on his deal but has reached an agreement to leave after his side reached the quarter-finals at the Euros.

Wenger, who speaks fluent French and German – the two primary languages of Switzerland – and lives in the country, had previously been contacted by the Swiss federation over the job in 1995.

The two parties were unable to reach an agreement and Wenger instead went to take charge of Japanese side Nagoya Grampus Eight before moving to Arsenal a year later.

According to the report, Wenger is only being considered as a short-term appointment.
