The Republic of Benin has turned down the Nigerian Government’s push for the extradition of Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho.
Igboho was arrested earlier this week in Cotonou, Benin Republic on his way to Germany. The Nigerian government, through its Ambassador in Benin Republic, Tukur Buratai, a former Chief of Army Staff, has been pushing for the extradition of Igboho to Nigeria.
Efforts by the Nigerian government to extradite him crashed after the Beninoise government tagged Igboho ‘not for extradition’.
The activist will however be facing charges for passport-related offences.

The Beninoise government disclosed that it wouldn’t handle a request for extradition without first trying him for the local offence he was arrested for. Igboho was arrested on Monday in Cadjèhoun Airport, Cotonou for being in possession of a “fake” Beninoise passport while trying to flee to Germany.
A security source in the West African country said, “The Nigerian government planned to extradite him on Wednesday, but our government said the rule of law must be followed as the world is watching us.”
