Buhari Approves New Security Measures To Tackle Insecurity In Southeast, South-South

The federal government has approved new measures to tackle the growing insecurity in the south-east and south-south.

This comes amid attacks on police formations in the zones by gunmen.

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Tuesday following the conclusion of a series of security meetings at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Babagana Monguno, national security adviser (NSA), said the meeting stressed the need to quickly address the nation’s security challenges in recent months.

The security threats in the country have failed to abate, with daily attacks and deaths recorded in different states.

In the north, residents remain at the mercy of Boko Haram insurgents and bandits while security agencies and government facilities are increasingly becoming targets of attacks by gunmen in the south.

On Sunday, Akwa Ibom recorded a second attack on a police station in 48 hours,  during which two officers were reportedly killed and vehicles razed.

At least four other police stations suffered similar attacks over the weekend, particularly in the southern region of the country.

Two police stations and a security checkpoint were invaded by gunmen on Saturday in Rivers state, leading to the death of seven officers, while in Abia, the police station in Ubani area was attacked on Sunday.
