Model Chidimma Adetshina has withdrawn from the Miss South Africa pageant amid an ongoing investigation into her nationality. The 23-year-old, born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and Mozambican mother, faced intense scrutiny over her eligibility to compete.

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs recently alleged that preliminary evidence suggests Adetshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft. While the department clarified that Adetshina, a minor at the time, was not involved, the allegations sparked public debate.

Citing the safety of her family, Adetshina announced her withdrawal on Thursday. “Being part of the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an amazing journey,” she said in an Instagram post. “However, after much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I.”

Adetshina was one of ten finalists vying for the Miss South Africa crown, with the winner set to represent the country at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico.
