FG Delegation To Visit Ghana Over Nigerian/Ghanaian Traders’ Conflict

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that a ministerial delegation be sent to Ghana to resolve the lingering conflict between Nigerian traders and Ghanaian authorities.

This is the second visit to Ghana over the trade dispute within one year.

The delegation will be led by Adeniyi Adebayo, minister of trade, industry and investment.

According to a statement by Ifedayo Sayo, special assistant on media to the minister,  the delegation would be comprised of private stakeholders also who would be sent to dialogue with Ghanaian trade authorities to find a solution to the crisis.

The meeting between both parties will be held between May 31 and June 1, 2021.

There have been issues involving Nigerian traders in Ghana which has lasted for months.

In 2020, shops belonging to Nigerian traders in Accra were locked up by Ghanaian authorities, who demanded evidence of their Ghana Investment Promotion Council (GIPC) registration.

Recall, gnbnews reported that the Nigerian Traders in Ghana had been having issues with Ghanaian Authorities for several years with records of maltreatment, molestation and forceful closure of shops.

The Ghanaian authorities had imposed regulations and traders were required to pay one million dollars business registration fee and taxes under the regulations.

The trade issues intensified when shops belonging to Nigerians in Accra were being locked up by Ghanaian authorities who demanded evidence of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council’s (GIPC) registration.

Meanwhile,  Nigerian traders had  expressed concern about the security of their wares in Ghana due to the challenges, and appealed to the federal government to evacuate them to Nigeria.
