Governorship Dispute: Supreme Court To Deliver Judgement Aug 31 On Bello’s Victory In Kogi

The Supreme Court has picked Monday, 31st August 2020 as the date to deliver its judgement on appeals seeking to nullify the election of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state.

The appeals were brought before the apex court by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its governorship candidate in the state, Musa Wada, and the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and its candidate, Natasha Akpoti.

The appellants alleged that governor Bello of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was not validly elected by the majority of lawful votes cast.

They prayed the Supreme Court to set aside the concurrent judgments of both the Kogi State Governorship Elections Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which declined to void the return of governor Bello by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as a winner of the gubernatorial contest.

Bello of the APC was declared the winner of the November 16 election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to results, Gov. Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 406,222 votes to defeat other contestants including Engr. Musa Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 189,704 votes.

However not satisfied with the declaration, Wada and the PDP headed to the election petition tribunal to challenge Bello and APC’s victory at the polls but have so far been unsuccessful in turning the tides in their favour at both the tribunal and appeal court stages of the petition.

The matter is currently before the Supreme Cout and the apex court has now picked 31st August 2020 to deliver its judgment.
