HEALTH WORKERS: NIGERIA MUST STEP UP TESTING CAPACITY TO CONQUER COVID-19 PANDEMIC

On the 12th of April, different medical and healthcare groups warned that Nigeria must buckle up in it’s testing capacity to be able to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Medical Association and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives came out to say that the lockdown by State and Federal Government isn’t enough to control the spread of the virus in the country.

Since the lockdown directive was announced by President Muhammadu Buhari on the 29 of March 2020, the rise in amount of confirmed cases haven’t dropped and so far 10 centres have be established to help diagnose, test and treat the COVID-19 disease.

The President of Nigeria Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, AbudulRauf Adeniji who spoke on the country’s readiness to fight the virus noted the Nigeria Health sector isn’t well-equipped for the virus. ”People might have the virus and will not know it and still mingle with health officials and even their families thereby spreading it. We are playing with the tail of a rattle snake in this country”

”What I’m saying is that the number of people, who have coronavirus in Nigeria, is more than the number recorded by government”
