Angeles Bejar, the mother of embattled Spanish Football Association President Luis Rubiales, has reportedly initiated a hunger strike and taken refuge in a Spanish church to protest what she perceives as an “inhuman witch-hunt” against her son. This protest is in response to the controversy surrounding an unsolicited kiss between her son and Spain striker Jennifer Hermoso during the Women’s World Cup trophy presentation.

Despite the outcry, Luis Rubiales, aged 46, has asserted that the kiss was “consensual,” while Hermoso maintains that she did not consent to a kiss on the lips.

In a recent press conference, Rubiales declined to resign from his position within the Spanish FA, and he even threatened legal action against Hermoso for defamation. Subsequently, mass resignations have taken place within the federation, including the departure of the entire coaching staff of the Spanish women’s team, led by head coach Jorge Vilda.

Furthermore, FIFA has provisionally suspended Rubiales for a period of 90 days due to the ongoing situation. This development has prompted Luis Rubiales’ mother to embark on a hunger strike. Angeles Bejar, a retired hairdresser, commenced her protest at the Divina Pastora de Motril church in Motril, an Andalucia coastal resort east of Malaga, where Luis Rubiales spent his childhood.

Angeles, whose husband is a former mayor of Motril, has declared that she will continue her hunger strike until her son receives what she perceives as “justice.” She has also called on Jenni Hermoso to reveal the “truth” about the kiss that led to Luis Rubiales’ provisional suspension by FIFA.
