According to a report from Punch , the was confusion on Command Road, Meiran, Lagos State, due to a clash between some police officers and tricycle operators in the area, and no fewer than three persons were killed.
The problem reportedly began when a yet-to-be-identified traffic warden allegedly stabbed one Aleyele, a tricycle operator, after he refused to give N100 as demanded.
It was gathered that some angry tricycle operators went after the officer. However, they couldn’t get him. The death of Aleyele sparked a protest, and some angry tricycle operators in the area deposited his lifeless body at Meiran Police Division.
It was reported that the angry protesters tried to set the police ablaze, but were allegedly dispersed by the police with tear gas canisters and bullets.
An eyewitness who identified himself as Segun told Punch correspondents that a vulcaniser was hit by a stray bullet while the police were trying to disperse them. He also said that three people lost their lives, and many others sustained injuries.
The Police Commissioner of Lagos state should address tricycle operators in the area, his speech should also carry a little apology, whether the police is at fault or not. At this time, there’s tension in the area, and a speech is needed to reduce the tension.
This would help restore peace in the area. The police should also set up a panel that’ll look into the issue, and bring the officer to book if he’s guilty.
