President Bola Tinubu has commended Rena Wakama, the head coach of the D’Tigress, for being named the best manager of the Olympic women’s basketball event by FIFA and the Olympic organisers.
Under Wakama’s leadership, the D’Tigress made history by reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time ever, becoming the first African nation to achieve this feat.
While Nigeria eventually lost to the United States in the quarter-finals, President Tinubu praised Wakama’s “well-established leadership qualities and dedication to excellence.” He urged the team to remain resilient and strive for future greatness.
The President also commended the entire Nigerian contingent for their sportsmanship, discipline, and sacrifice at the Olympics. Despite not winning any medals, Tinubu expressed gratitude for their service to the country.
With 88 athletes competing across 12 sports, Nigeria’s performance marked its worst Olympic outing since London 2012, and the eighth time the country has returned from the Games without a medal.
