Police Takeover 23 Local Government Secretariats in Rivers

The crisis stems from the expiration of the three-year tenure of local government chairmen on Monday.

Escalating tensions in Rivers State have led the Rivers State Police Command to take over all 23 Local Government Council Secretariats and critical government infrastructure. This action follows the tragic deaths of two security operatives, a policeman and a vigilante, in Eberi-Omuma, Omuma Local Government Area.

Unrest linked to LG Chairmen’s Tenure: The crisis stems from the expiration of the three-year tenure of local government chairmen on Monday. While Governor Siminalayi Fubara directed new heads of administration to take over,21 of the outgoing chairmen have refused to relinquish their positions. This has resulted in clashes and a breakdown of law and order.

Police Takeover and Investigation: To prevent further violence, the police have deployed regular and anti-riot officers to secure the council secretariats and infrastructure. Spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko assured residents that investigations into the security deaths are underway and urged everyone to remain calm and law-abiding. She warned against any attempts to disrupt peace and promised a firm response from law enforcement.

Governor Holds Security Meeting: Governor Fubara convened an emergency security council meeting to discuss strategies to contain the crisis and address the invasion of local government offices. The details of the meeting remain undisclosed, but it signifies the seriousness with which the state government is addressing the situation.

Uncertainties Remain: While the police takeover aims to restore order, the situation in Rivers State remains tense. The outcome of the security council meeting and the response of the outgoing council chairmen are yet to be seen. Residents are advised to follow official updates and maintain peace.
