Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has advocated for the entry of emigrant Nigerian physicians.

She said this as she bemoaned the rise in brain drain in the healthcare industry and argued that it needed to be stopped.

At the Healthcare Transformation Coalition interactive session in Lagos with the theme “Imperatives of Addressing Brain Drain in the Health Sector,” Sanwo-wife Olu’s announced this.

The state’s first lady added that unity was necessary to change the ugly narrative and that a functional system was necessary to stop the downward trend.

She urged medical professionals to ensure that they return to Nigeria to advance the healthcare system there if they go abroad for additional training.

Akin Abayomi, the state’s commissioner for health, added that brain drain was not a recent phenomenon and had been going on ever since Nigeria gained its independence.

“It has been going on ever since Nigeria gained its independence in 1960,” he said. No discipline is exempt from brain drain. There is a dynamic brain drain. There is a severe youth purge in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos. The youth population has a median age under 30 of 70%.

“Our pyramid is therefore very broad. The demographics of the United States of America, Japan, and the United Kingdom are reversed when compared.

They have a very low birth rate, which results in a large elderly population and an upside-down pyramid in the developed world, forcing them to look to other nations with a proper pyramid to recruit human capital.

Therefore, Nigeria and Lagos are a natural exporter of human expertise due to their demographic profile.
