The South-East Coalition for Sustainable Development bemoaned how the region’s socioeconomic development was being hampered by the criminal activity taking place there.

In order to stop the violence and senseless killings occurring in the area, the group urged the locals to work with the Nigerian military.

Onu Ikenna, the group’s president, and Uchechi Mgbidi, its secretary, urged the military to ensure that elections in the area are held in a secure environment in a statement released on Monday.

The statement said, in part, “We beg our people to support the military as the Igbos’ development strides are being undermined by the actions of a few.

We must stop the violence and senseless killings that are starting to make us appear to be cannibals.

“We also appreciate the CDS’s assurance that no threat to the general election in 2023 will be tolerated by the military or other security agencies. Now is the time for our people to voice their opinions on who should run their affairs. That right cannot be taken away from them.

However, we implore the locals to support the military’s non-kinetic actions so that Nigerians can have peace return to the area.
