STRIKE: ASUU demands withdrawal of minister’s certificate as UNIBEN students protest

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has written to the University of Jos, requesting an investigation and the revocation of Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba’s doctorate degree. Students from various Edo State tertiary institutions protested the ongoing ASUU strike in Benin, the state capital, on Thursday.

The union’s demands include university autonomy, the release of revitalisation funds for Nigerian universities, and the implementation of the University Transparency Accountability and Solution payment platform for the payment of university lecturers’ salaries and allowances, among other things. On the issues raised, the government and the union have yet to reach an agreement.

As the squabbles continue, Nwajiuba confirmed to  News men that his union had written to UNIJOS requesting that his certificate be revoked. “ASUU wrote UNIJOS to have my certificate recalled,” the minister explained. I’m not sure what they’re looking for. The university informed me that this was ASUU’s directive to investigate my certificate. That’s how far they’ve progressed.

“When I received the letter from the university, they didn’t hide it; instead, they noted that ASUU wrote it.

The strike, on the other hand, has taken a toll on the students, with some of them complaining about its negative consequences. On Thursday, traffic and human movement were disrupted in parts of Benin for several hours as students from the state’s tertiary institutions protested the strike’s continuation. They requested government intervention and pledged to remain in the city centre on a daily basis until their demands are met.
