The European Union says its €102.5 million humanitarian aid will benefit Nigeria and other countries in the Lake Chad region.

Niger, Chad, and Cameroon are among the other countries named in Europe’s top bloc’s humanitarian lifeline.

On Monday and Tuesday, the European Union made the pledge during the third high-level conference on the Lake Chad Region in Niamey.

The conference’s goal was to foster regional, cross-border consensus on the necessary adjustments for effectively dealing with the region’s current challenges.

According to the EU, the funding was intended to address problems related to the acute food needs of conflict-affected households and communities, as well as to treat severe acute undernutrition in children under the age of five.

Lake Chad encompasses the far west of Chad and the northeast of Nigeria, as well as Niger and Cameroon. In recent decades, the region had been the site of lingering conflicts that had killed many and displaced many more.
