The UK Supreme Court has ruled that the  controversial proposal to send asylum seekers to Rwanda is illegal, according to BBC reports.

The plan, aimed at deterring dangerous Channel crossings, allowed individuals in Rwanda to seek asylum there, return home, or apply for asylum in another country, excluding the UK.

However, Lord Reed, the court’s President, expressed concerns about a “real risk” of asylum seekers being sent back to the places they fled.

Despite legal challenges since its 2022 announcement, the plan was initially deemed lawful by the High Court, a decision later overturned by the Court of Appeal, a ruling now confirmed by the Supreme Court.
