The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E Geoffrey Onyeama, on 23rd March 2020, received in audience the Ambassador of the Republic of Guinea, H.E Siaka Cissoko, to Nigeria to discuss issues aimed at building on the existing cordial bilateral relations between the two countries.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, released a statement on the recent developments in the Republic of Guinea. In the Press release which was signed by the spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye, said the Federal Government of Nigeria has been observing with keen and constructive interest, the recent political and social developments in the Republic of Guinea.
“Nigeria believes that West Africa has made significant and laudable democratic progress. Despite persistent security and political challenges, giant strides have been attained in building and strengthening the legitimacy of democratic institutions, conducting open elections, ensuring peaceful transitions and improving the rule of law in our sub-region.
“As a country, our faith in democracy as the foundation for peace, progress, development and stability in the sub-region is unshaken and we remain firm in our commitment to peaceful means of conflict resolution. We therefore, express strong confidence in the people of the Republic of Guinea to act peacefully and in concert, to resolve all internal challenges; and that the Government in Guinea should provide the required enabling environment.
“To this end, the Federal Government of Nigeria calls on all political actors and other stakeholders in the country to refrain from violence and commit to transparent, free, fair, and peaceful elections that must be inclusive in order to consolidate peace and stability in the Republic of Guinea”.
