It is quite gratifying that despite how much the separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has heightened its agitations for Biafra in displeasing ways, the socio-cultural Igbo group Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo has maintained its resolute determination for Igbos to remain in a united Nigeria. It could be recalled that sometime in the month of July, the renowned Igbo group, in a patriotic manner, called  on the attention of the masses to know that Igbos will never leave Nigeria for anyone, stating that they are co-owners of the country.

However, it is in my best interest to disclose that despite IPOB’s agitations, Ohanaeze has once again reiterated that the Igbo tribe will never depart from Nigeria. In a recent statement gathered from the group, here are notable reasons why Ohanaeze still firmly maintains that Igbos will remain in Nigeria.

First, “Igbos have as much right in Nigeria as any other ethnic group.” The equity and justice existent in Nigeria’s cooperate existence has inspired Ohanaeze to firmly maintain that Igbos have equal rights as other ethnic groups and that’s why they can’t secede. This assertion outrightly creates room for Igbos in Nigeria who claim they have been politically discriminated to clear such misconceptions. As a matter of fact, Igbos still remain part of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria after Yoruba and Hausa.

Secondly, Ohanaeze noted that the Igbos have sacrificed a lot for the unity of Nigeria. In this delight, the group has firmly maintained that Igbos will remain in “one Nigeria” where they have sacrificed a lot to build unity. In the area of sacrificing towards Nigeria’s unity, Igbos have produced productive leaders whose leadership aptitude contributed immensely to the unity and progress of the country. Great Igbo politicians like late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, who is the father of Nigerian Nationalism; former Sen. Ken Nnamani, who firmly stood against Obasanjo’s third term agenda, and lots more will never be forgotten by the Igbos.

In conclusion, the aforementioned reasons which were deduced from Ohanaeze’s recent statements, depicts why IPOB’s agitations would most likely not stop Igbos from embracing unity in Nigeria.
