In protest of alleged irregularities, a women’s group operating under the banner of “Angry Nigerian Women” stormed the main road leading to the International Conference Centre, the location of the national collation of the presidential election results, on Tuesday.
About 200 women marched to the ICC to protest what they called “rigged” results, but they were stopped by heavily armed security personnel at the intersection of the ICC, National Defence (War) College, and the Central Bank of Nigeria.
If the Independent National Electoral Commission did not comply with their demands regarding why the presidential election polling unit results had not been electronically transmitted to the INEC-result viewing portal, they threatened to go naked.
The angry women carried placards that read, “INEC stop rigging,” “future of our children at stake,” “Mahmood give us our results,” “we are tired of injustice,” and “occupy INEC now.” They also sang songs like “we no gree oo” and “Mahmood give us results, original results na im we want.” oruba
To address the protesting women, there was no INEC representative present.
However, a security guard in plain clothes ordered them to cross the street and gave them the assurance that he would deliver their message to the proper people.
The protesters, according to their spokesperson Oby Elekwe, were upset that the IReV portal did not receive the results of the presidential election because they believed there had been fraud.
She claimed INEC had promised to respond, but if they didn’t, Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, and all other mothers would have to give birth in the same way—naked.
Elekwe remarked, “They have promised to come and hear us. They have promised to respond to us, and we have assured them that if they do not, we will speak to them in motherly terms. We are going to strip off right here. It’s enough already. We’re worn out. This is our demand, and we won’t back down because we believe that a new Nigeria is possible for everyone, not just the wealthy. not exclusively for senators. not just for the lawmakers.
Nigeria reborn for the masses. That is the only thing we ask for.
“These are a bunch of enraged Nigerian women who are here to seize our country by force. We are here to seize it forcibly. We need a response from them. The end result is our rage. We request an IReV outcome. Results that were transmitted electronically, just as Mahmood Yakubu had assured us they would be after mothers flocked to the polls. From the voting booths to the wards to the local councils to the states, he said. That is what we demand, then. We are not willing to compromise this election because what we are getting is not what he promised. Rigging is not an acceptable response from us.
“We require polling unit results. The only thing that will get us off the road is that. All these women you are looking at will go naked on this road in the same way that we went into the delivery room while pregnant and gave birth to Mahmood Yakubu. In the event that they do not respond to us today, it will occur.
