The Flying Eagles will receive all necessary support and attention from the football governing body as they continue to prepare for the finals of the Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, according to Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, president of the Nigeria Football Federation.
The NFF President provided the reassurance on Sunday night while paying a visit to the Flying Eagles at the Hotel Novotel in Mohammedia, Morocco, where they were staying as part of their training tour. This was soon after the team had defeated its Congolese opponents 2-1 in a friendly match at the Complexe Sportif Sidi Mohammed.
“Permit me to take this opportunity to thank you all for beating the Congolese team. You played well, so the victory was well-earned. I think the majority of Nigerians will benefit from the presence of many talented players in this country.
“The NFF, which I am leading, is working assiduously to make sure you receive all the support required for you to succeed. For this reason, I gave the secretariat the order to settle all of your camping allowances, which was completed prior to your departure. I can assure you that we are already planning how to motivate you even more once you arrive in Cairo. All you have to do is make Nigerians proud by going out there.
“I urge you to secure that ticket and then get to the final and win the trophy. Getting to the semi-finals is crucial because that ensures us a place in the FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia.
Daniel Bameyi, the team’s captain, thanked the President for coming while assuring him that the players are prepared for the challenge ahead and will do their part to ensure the team not only earns a spot in the World Cup but also goes all-out for the trophy.
Prior to the team’s departure to Cairo on Thursday, the Flying Eagles are anticipated to play the U20 boys of the Central African Republic on Wednesday.
Nigeria outplayed the Congolese for a sizable portion of the first half before Solomon Oniangue’s goal for the boys from Brazzaville in the 21st minute put the visitors in the lead. Francis Ayuba, Mohammed Ibrahim, and Haliru Sarki all had excellent chances to draw the Flying Eagles level but squandered them.
However, goals from Emmanuel Uchegbu and Adams Olamilekan in the 66th and 74th minutes turned the game around for Nigeria and preserved the Flying Eagles’ unbeaten streak in all games and competitions.
