The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, denied media reports that there was excessive voting in the state’s governorship election on July 16, 2022, on Thursday in Osogbo.
Mr. Adewale Francis, the department’s head for voter education, publicity, and inclusivity, claimed that Agboke’s claim about excessive voting was false and malicious.
“The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, is alleged to have stated in media reports that there was over-voting during the election, which has caught the attention of the INEC office in Osun State.
The report is false and malicious.
“The REC only discussed the Biomodal Voters Accreditation System’s effectiveness as a tool for voter accreditation when he met with Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo.
“Any extrapolation to the contrary should be ignored because it is outside the scope of the statement.
He urged the media, saying, “We implore the media to always verify their source of information before publication.”
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Agboke visited Oba Akanbi in Iwo on Tuesday and gave a demonstration of the BVAS devices.
However, he was quoted by some media outlets as claiming that some INEC officials and politicians used or mishandled the BVAS machines to cast excessively large numbers of ballots during the Osun governorship election.
Ademola Adeleke, a member of the People’s Democratic Party, was declared elected governor on January 27 by an election petition tribunal presided over by Justice Terste Kume.
According to it, Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress won the election in fact.
Additionally, it stated that there were excessive votes cast during the election in 10 of the state’s 30 local government areas.
