TikTok To Implement Screen Time Restrictions For Its Younger Users.

On Wednesday, TikTok announced that it would automatically impose daily screen time limits of one hour for accounts owned by users under the age of 18, in response to criticism of the social media platform for fostering addiction among young users.

After 60 minutes, teens will need to enter a passcode to continue watching, and children under 13 need a parent or guardian to set or enter a passcode to grant them an additional 30 minutes, according to TikTok.

The short-form video-sharing app said the changes would be implemented “in the coming weeks”.

Parents can set a child’s maximum screen time based on the day of the week if a young person accesses TikTok through a family pairing account, TikTok added.

For users under the age of 14, the Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin, is limited to 40 minutes per day and unavailable to them from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

A weekly inbox notification that summarizes a user’s screen time and a prompt that was introduced last year to encourage teenagers to enable screen time management are two other features that the new feature complements.

However, as on other platforms, young users will still have the option to hide their age or deselect the time limit feature.

The Chinese social media platform has come under fire for the growing amount of time kids between the ages of four and eighteen spend scrolling through videos that are recommended to them based on their preferences and algorithms.

A recent study by the parental control app Qustodio found that in 2022, minors would spend an average of one hour and 47 minutes per day on TikTok.

The European Union’s institutions recently ordered their staff to remove the app from their devices due to concerns about data protection in the West, which have also affected the website owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

Canada has adopted a similar measure, and the White House has given US federal agencies 30 days to remove TikTok from government-issued devices.
