On Sunday night, Temilade Openiyi, also known as Tems, won her first Grammy. Best Rap Melodic Performance went to Tems, who collaborated with Drake on Future’s “Wait for You.” Additionally, the song received a nomination for Best Rap Song.
Tems is the second female artist of Nigerian descent to win a Grammy, following Sade Adu, a British-Nigerian singer.
When Sade won the Best New Artist Grammy Award in 1986, it was her first Grammy Award.
Burna Boy, who also holds a Grammy, was not nominated for either of the two songs he was in. He received nominations for Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance for his album “Love Damini” and the song “Last Last.” Masa Takumi, a Japanese musician, won these categories with his album “Sakura,” and Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini, and Nomcebo Zikode won with their song “Bayethe.” At the Grammys’ opening ceremony, the winners were revealed.
Since Burna Boy won the Grammy in 2021 for Best Global Music Album with his album Twice as Tall, more mainstream Nigerian artists have aimed to win the coveted golden gramophone.
Following Tems’ victory, Nigerians took to social media to express their optimism that Afrobeats is finally ready to make a bigger impact.
